What is MTD for Income Tax?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) is HMRC’s new way of reporting self-employment and UK property income. Instead of one Self Assessment a year, you keep digital records and send HMRC a short update every quarter.
You’ll need MTD-compatible software to do it. Joy Pilot is that software — and we’re already recognised by HMRC.
When does MTD apply to you?
April 2026
Gross income over £50,000 from self-employment and/or UK property
April 2027
Threshold drops to £30,000
April 2028
Threshold drops to £20,000
Source: HMRC. Thresholds apply to combined gross self-employment and UK property income.
Recognised and live in production
HMRC has recognised our production application for five MTD for IT APIs. These features are working in Joy Pilot today.

Finalise at year-end
Confirm your figures and submit your final declaration — the MTD-for-IT replacement for Self Assessment.
MTD questions
Yes. Joy Pilot’s production application has passed HMRC’s fraud prevention header evaluation and holds live API subscriptions for Business Details, Obligations, Self-Employment Business, Property Business and Individual Calculations.
UK sole traders and landlords with gross self-employment and/or UK property income above £50,000 from April 2026, £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. If that’s you, you’ll need MTD-compatible software.
Quarterly updates and in-product tax calculation are live now. End-of-year return functionality is in development and planned for delivery before the April 2027 mandation, alongside extra income types like employment (PAYE), UK interest, UK dividends and pensions.
For the initial release we’re focused on the mainstream sole-trader and landlord journey. Foreign interest, foreign dividends, Capital Gains Tax, partner income and SA Assist are not on the v1 roadmap. If your return depends on one of these, an accountant-led product may be a better fit until we catch up.
No. Making Tax Digital is a UK-only HMRC scheme. If you’re in New Zealand, Australia or anywhere else, you can ignore this page and use Joy Pilot for everyday bookkeeping as normal.
